Punctuation Comma

Punctuations are used in written text to make the meaning clear. The Comma represents the shortest pause, and is used :

(1) To separate a series of words in the same construction; as,

  • England, France and Italy formed an alliance.
  • He lost lands, money, reputation and friends.
  • (2)  To set off a noun of address. For example,

  • Father, I need your help.
  • Sit down, Vinay.
  • Pandit Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, died in 1964.
  • (3) To separate each pair of words connected by and as given below:

  • We should be devout and humble, cheerful and serene.
  • High and low, rich and poor, wise and foolish, must all die.
  • (4) Before and after words, phrases, or clauses, let into the body of sentence; as,

  • He did not, however, gain his object.
  • It is mid, after all, which does the work of the world.
  • (5) Before please and thank you,  when they are placed at the end of a sentence. For example,

  • Could you pass me the salt, please ?
  • Will you have tea ? No, thank you.
